We're pleased to learn of your interest in our residency program in psychiatry at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. This web page will introduce you to the Central Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine, and our community.
As a university-based program, we offer residents diverse clinical experiences, excellent teaching, and a broad range of patient services. We seek candidates with a strong academic record, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a sincere desire to work with and care for patients. For those selected, we provide a combination of high-quality training in a world-class facility, coupled with superb quality of life.
The foundation of our program is built on Penn State Hershey Medical Center's 504-bed tertiary care facility that serves more than 2.6 million people in central Pennsylvania. The Medical Center boasts a level 1 trauma center complete with aeromedical transportation facilities, a network of community-based clinics, and an $83 million internationally acclaimed research program. Our residents experience a diverse caseload at the Medical Center, which serves both urban and rural communities.
At the same time, the Hershey community is a wonderful and safe place to live, work, and play. It offers residents and their family members a wide range of cultural events, recreational facilities, superior schools and institutions of higher education, and professional employment opportunities. We understand that choosing a residency can be both difficult and exciting. That's why we want to provide you with the information you need to make an informed choice. We'll be happy to develop a personalized interview schedule as well as a departmental, campus and community tour. Please call us at (717) 531-8136. We look forward to hearing from you.
Remember...
Choosing a residency is a complex decision. The program you choose will have a profound impact on how and what you learn, the kind of physician you become, and even the type of practice you develop. At Penn State Hershey Medical Center, we believe you'll find a program rich in opportunity. We're large enough to give you a broad scope of training in all areas of psychiatry, yet small enough to provide personal instruction. We recognize how important this decision is for you and your loved ones. While this website gives you an overview of our program, it cannot answer all your questions. If you'd like additional information or if you prefer to speak with a faculty member, a staff member, or one of our residents, please contact our residency office at (717) 531-8136.
Testimonials of Previous Residents
"My appreciation of the very excellent training I received at PSUHMC continues to grow as I meet with success as a child psychiatrist. It was an intense two years for me ....a great training experience. As I graduated and departed for my home in California I did not fully realize how much I would miss the kindly mentors in the PSUHMC child psychiatry residency training program."
