The postdoctoral fellowship program in clinical child psychology is a two year training program. There are two primary objectives: (1) is to develop clinical and research skills which will enable the postdoctoral fellow to competently deliver services to children, adolescents, and their families and (2) to build a junior level professional knowledge, skill, and attitude base to prepare to independently practice as well as to conduct research. The program seeks to prepare psychologists who are exceptionally well-suited to begin a productive academic career. By the end of the first year, the postdoctoral fellow will be expected to take and pass the EPPP and the Pennsylvania Ethics and Law exam.
The goals are achieved through specific training foci based on the program’s areas of expertise. First, the postdoctoral fellow will earn comprehensive training in cognitive behavioral therapy with individuals, families, and groups. Second, they will learn state-of-the-art assessment techniques. Third, they will obtain multidisciplinary training in a medical setting through various potential inpatient and outpatient rotations, including the psychiatric inpatient unit, the general outpatient clinic, specialty clinics in anxiety/mood disorders, autism, ADHD, and eating disorders. Potential teaching opportunities within the institution also exist. Finally, postdoctoral fellows will be fully integrated into the department’s dynamic and growing research projects such as anxiety/stress/trauma, neuroimaging, psychiatric clinical trials, cognitive behavior therapy, and sleep medicine.
Candidates for the postdoctoral fellowship should hold a doctorate in either clinical, counseling, or school psychology from an APA accredited program or its equivalent. Additionally, the candidate should have successfully completed an APA-accredited predoctoral internship or its equivalent. Third, the applicant should possess solid clinical skills and a basic knowledge of cognitive behavior therapy. Finally, the candidate should have interest and training in either clinical or basic science research methods.
